Hi {contactfield=firstname|Fellow Golfer},

Welcome to the July 2024 issue of the Asian Golf Traveler, the source for information about golf travel in Asia. Also, unique golf playing tips for South East Asia's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest subscription offer are all integral parts of today's newsletter.

It’s tournament season here at Golfasian, and we have some exciting news and updates to share with you.

We are delighted to announce two new prestigious golf events for 2025 that you won't want to miss. First, we are introducing the Philippines Golf Invitational in Clark, Philippines, set for February 2025. Following closely is the launch of the Amari Hua Hin Golf Week in Hua Hin, Thailand, scheduled for March 2025. Both events promise to deliver exceptional golfing experiences in stunning locations. For a full list of all events, visit our golf tournament calendar.

In this newsletter, we are featuring Chiang Rai. As the wet season peaks in Thailand, I wonder: What winter golf destination should I recommend to you? I stumbled upon a fascinating story from January 7, 1955, when Chiang Rai witnessed a rare phenomenon — Thailand's only snowfall. This fact sparks a nostalgic trip down my golf memory lane in this northern region. I recall golfing at Santiburi Chiang Rai, one of Thailand's best Robert Trent Jones courses and the jewel of the North, on a chilly morning ten years ago. The temperature was around 15 °C, and the golf club staff greeted me with hot tea, a warm gesture of golf hospitality. I felt cozy and relaxed and played the first sub-80 round of my life. I scored a solid 79 without any mulligans or dropped shots. The golf course amazed me.

I invite you to explore the beauty and magic of Chiang Rai with me. If you plan to visit this winter, don't miss the opportunity to spend three days enjoying its superb golf, culture, and hospitality. Contact me directly if you are interested in a Chiang Rai golf holiday.

Now is the best time to travel to Southeast Asia for golf. Courses are less crowded, rates are lower, and the overall experience during this 'green season' is phenomenal. Contact our golf travel experts today to start planning your next golf holiday in Asia.

DESTINATION OF THE MONTH:  Chiang Rai

Discover golf in Chiang Rai: A Gem of History and Nature Founded in 1262 by King Meng Rai, Chiang Rai was the first capital of the Lanna Thai Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of a Million Rice Fields. Although later conquered by Burma, it wasn't until 1786 that Chiang Rai was integrated into Thai territory and subsequently declared a province by King Rama VI in 1910.

Today, Chiang Rai stands as a golfer’s paradise, boasting three golf courses and a wealth of natural and historical attractions. The province is a living testament to past civilizations, offering magnificent mountain scenery, ancient ruins, historic sites, Buddhist shrines, and ethnic villages. Home to several hill tribes who maintain their unique lifestyles, Chiang Rai provides a rich cultural tapestry.

For nature enthusiasts, the region offers jungle trekking and visits to working elephant camps, with opportunities to explore local hill tribe villages along the way. Whether you're drawn by the promise of a perfect golf swing or the allure of its cultural and natural beauty, Chiang Rai invites you to explore its many treasures.

Golfers living in Thailand will tell you that Santiburi in Chiang Rai is one of their favorite golf courses in Thailand, and this is no small compliment! The Chiang Rai Robert Trent Jones Jr designed Santiburi Country Club covers vast fields with excellent placement of holes and an abundance of water hazards and bunkers. The golf course is widely regarded as one of the best conceived and maintained golf courses in Asia.

Set into the contours of a valley, Santiburi offers a landscaped golf course that winds beneath a canopy of magnificent shade trees. The layout crosses lakes and streams and lush green foothills, and the mountains of Chiang Rai. The golf course is championship caliber, yet it is playable and enjoyable for golfers on every skill level.
