Welcome to the December 2022 issue of the Asian Golf Insider, the source for news-breaking information about golf in Asia. Also, unique golf-playing tips for South East Asia's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and fantastic upcoming tournament information are all parts of this newsletter.

Can you believe it's the last month of 2022? I don't know where this year went, as things have been non-stop since mid-year.

I hope this newsletter finds you in holiday spirits.

With winter descending quickly in the Northern Hemisphere, Southeast Asia and its tropical climate are the perfect destinations for travelers from Europe and North America to escape winter. Arguably the best time of the year for golf in Asia, these months are sometimes called the winter season, and while far from cold, sunny and dry days are ideal for golf. Timing varies slightly from country to country based on the effects of the annual monsoons, but generally, the peak golf season is December to March, when the weather is driest and coolest.

At Golfasian now, we handle a record number of golf travelers, so thank you to those who have traveled or are here. If anyone had asked me to predict things earlier, I would have marked them nuts to proclaim such astounding golf travel statistics. The shortage and cost of flights remain the significant obstacle to golf tourism as most carriers haven't resumed flights and frequencies. The good news is the supply-demand imbalance is changing, so for those interested, keep checking with the airlines; 2023 is the year to get back to regular golf travel.

On the events side, the inaugural Pullman Invitational is this week, and I can't wait to return to Pattaya. Next is the Hua Hin Skins, followed by two majors, Centara World Masters and Pattaya Men's. The two events in June are about to sell out, even as we have seven months to go. Does anyone want to bet 2023 will be a bumper year not only for individual travel but also for Asian golf tournaments too?

DESTINATION OF THE MONTH: CHIANG MAI
Chiang Mai’s historic importance is derived from its strategic location on the Ping River and major trading routes. Chiang Mai is a city built on the roots of a traditional Thai culture and heritage. The beautiful Northern Thailand Lanna culture has a personality of its own. The Thai people themselves look to those hailing from Chiang Mai as the most cultured in the country. While officially the city of Chiang Mai only covers only a small area, the urban sprawl of the city now extends to a population of nearly one million people.

For those who enjoy other treasures as well you won’t be disappointed. Chiang Mai offers its golf visitors a city rich in culture, spas, massage, crafts, temples and natural beauty. Anyone on a golf holiday in Chiang Mai can select from the best championship golf courses such as Chiang Mai Highlands, Alpine Chiang Mai, Gassan Khuntan, Summit Green Valley Chiang Mai, and Royal Chiang Mai.

COURSE OF THE MONTH: CHIANG MAI HIGHLANDS
Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort opened in 2005 and significantly added to the quality of Chiang Mai golf courses. The drive to Highlands from Chiang Mai leads through the stunning landscape, in an eastern direction passing rice fields and plantations into the mountains.

Chiang Mai Highlands golf course is built on a 'power spot' - the hermitage of Kuba Sivichai (the revered monk who founded the famous Doi Suthep temple). This site is breathtaking in every direction. Its tranquility, high elevation, cold climate, fresh air, pure water, and fertile soil, form the perfect place for the 27-hole layout.

ACCOMMODATION OF THE MONTH:

The 4-star Mövenpick Suriwongse Hotel Chiang Mai is located in front of the night market and provides well-decorated rooms and suites to ensure a perfect golf holiday. For the golfer, the hotel in-room massages and Thai, Mediterranean, and Caribbean cuisine at the three dining outlets. Golfasian To the Four at World Golf Awards with Quartet of Titles
GOLFASIAN reaffirmed its post-pandemic resurgence by notching four awards at this year’s World Golf Awards, including the prized title of Asia’s Best Golf Tour Operator.

Asia’s largest golf tour operator marks its 25th anniversary this year. And there was plenty for it to celebrate at the World Golf Awards ceremony, which was held yesterday in Abu Dhabi.

As well as being named Asia’s Best Golf Tour Operator 2022, Golfasian was voted Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator 2022 for three destinations: Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The quartet of awards once again confirmed its status as one of the region’s most respected names in golf tourism. Read all about it here.
