Khao Yai is Thailand’s oldest and second largest National Park covering an area of more than 2000 square kilometers and sports mountains over 1300 meters in height. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and lies in the mountain range just east of Bangkok. The natural environment of thickly forested hillsides, rushing streams, and cascading waterfalls provides a haven for golfers. A vast array of wildlife, including tigers and other big cats, all co-exist in the park’s forest along with larger residents such as elephants and black bears. Bird life includes hornbills, pheasants, eagles and many smaller species, both resident and migratory. Tigers are only seen on very rare occasions but sightings of deer, birds, monkeys and some of the smaller cats are all fairly common. In recognition of its unique natural character, fauna, and wildlife, Khao Yai has recently been named a World Heritage site.
While popular with local Thais, not many Thailand golf visitors know about golf in Khao Yai. The area lies mainly in Nakhon Ratchasima Province (near Korat), but also includes parts of Saraburi, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok provinces. At the park’s borders, there are numerous golf resorts, hotels, and of course championship golf courses. Accommodation around Khao Yai is plentiful and ranges from inexpensive lodges to 5-star golf resorts.
