The Woodlands course has been laid out over dramatically changing the terrain. The main feature of this course is the large undulation of the natural landscape. The overall concept for the Ian Baker-Finch course was to work closely with the physical site leaving the jungle on both sides of the fairways and significant elevation changes. This layout is indeed not a pushover resort course. It is a course that will test all facets of play. There are several tight tee shots with some blind, uphill approach shots. Deep bunkering around the often elevated greens and threatening water hazards on five or six of the holes will also need to be taken into account placing an emphasis on course management.

Within this excellently maintained, undulating jungle environment there are many fabulous holes to enjoy on this Bintan golf course.

All 18 green complexes were revised, and bunkers have been reduced in number and better positioned to more strategic locations. Also, low maintenance features such as grass depressions, fairway tiers, and mounds have been added to enhance the playing strategy and shot variety. Wider fairways not only benefit average golfers but also open up new possibilities for serious golfers looking for birdie opportunities. However, accurate approach play is required to score well and avoid the longish grass found on most holes.

The Laguna Bintan layout, comprising two out-and-back 9-hole loops, is more undulating on the front-nine, flatter on the back, and contains some memorable holes. The golf course starts with unique sea views on the 2nd to 4th holes, then wraps around a series of lagoons on holes 6 to 8. The 9th is another challenging hole as it plays long and uphill back towards the clubhouse.

The back nine plays on the other side of the resort and opens with holes 10 to 15 playing through dense jungle and the unique rock outcroppings. The highlight of the golf course is the long par-4 sixteenth through the forest back towards the sea. The signature hole is the 17th. The spectacular and tough par-3 requires a shot across the beach, over an impressive rocky shore and onto a tree-surrounded and well-guarded green. The impact of this visually intimidating hole is eased by the beautiful backdrop of the sea and the Banyan Tree Resort on the hillside.

The traditional Indonesian-style clubhouse sits at the highest point of the property and looks out over the golf course.  Refurbished in 2016, it retains much of the tropical island design feel, modern luxuries and conveniences have been added to pamper all golfers. The terrace café offers a selection of local and international dishes catered as part of the Banyan Tree. A well-stocked pro shop has a decent selection of logoed golf apparel, supplies, and equipment.

Five tees make the Golden Bear's Sea View course very playable for golfers of all handicaps. From the championship tees, the course stretches out to a very challenging 6,443 meters. Factor in the cooling winds, which blow in from the South China Sea, and you can find yourself in a quandary over club selection, especially at the signature hole, the par three 12th, which plays directly towards the sea. The layout is undoubtedly one of Indonesia's best seaside holes.

The Sea View course is not only about the panoramic South China Sea views. Like in so many Jack Nicklaus courses, strategy and placing of your shots is the secret to playing them well, and this time the master has created a layout where playing it safe and keeping out of trouble is key.

The front nine plots its way through native, tropical jungle where Nicklaus has made good use of his trademark bunkering throughout the rolling topography. However, it's all about South China Sea views on the back nine as the course tumbles towards the sea.
