May be old but still challenging
The Iloilo Golf and Country Club, formerly and informally known as the Santa Barbara Golf Course in Brgy. San Sebastian, Santa Barbara, was built in 1907 by a group of Irish expatriates building the Panay line of Panay Railways.
It has endured many historical changes throughout it’s time, being originally a nine-hole course, and then they added another nine holes.
Initially it was exclusive used only by English and Scottish migrants, however by the 1920’s it was opened to Filipinos as well.
What makes this course so prestigious, is that it was the first Philippine club that was accepted as an affiliate of one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the world. Namely the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, based in Scotland.
In 1947 the club was later known as the Iloilo Golf and Country Club and carried on this name up to the present day. Due to its age and historical value, the course has been recognized by the National Historical Institute.
The 6,056-yard golf course may be old, but playing here can still be quite the challenge to everyday golfers.
This course was designed with an abundance of trees, tall hills, rolling terrains, and water hazards, that are scattered throughout the fairways. This creates a difficult playing field, even the low handicap players.
Throughout the golf course, there are Old Mahogany and other hardwood trees, scattered amongst the terrain. These trees also contribute to the pristine and scenic view of the historical course. Here there are no two holes that are similar on the course, as the original design layout was left to be in its natural state.
The fairly water-laced Iloilo Golf Course, have facilities to accommodate most players’ needs. It has a modern clubhouse with tee houses on the course, restaurant services and practice areas.
We recommend you visit their museum, which is filled with golf memorabilia and golf archives on display, showcasing its over 100 years in existence. Fascinating!
