In spite of the humidity and heat, golf seems to be very popular in the country. It all started quite a long time ago – supposedly brought over by the British men who worked for the Manila Railway Company. Apparently with ample time on their hands and a surplus of caddies available to haul one’s clubs and the occasional beer, the Brits built a 3-hole course somewhere in the paddy fields around Intramuros, now in the centre of the capital city. The sport became popular enough that by 1901, a 9-hole course was built next to the railway station in Caloocan. Now there are in fact around 111 Golf Courses in the Philippines, many around Manila and spread out throughout 5,000 of those islands.
Air Force City Golf Club

This par 72 18-hole course is located near the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, around a 20 minutes’ drive North West from Angeles City. Air Force City is a relatively short course at 6,179 yards, and has a flat layout, with well-maintained Carabao grassed fairways and greens. Don’t be fooled, however, by their flat fairways, as they are known to be relatively unforgiving and slow.
Alabang Golf and Country Club
(Metro Manila premium club)
Founded back in 1981, this Club has a total land area of 74 hectares that includes a par 72, 6,950 yards 18-hole golf course. Ever since the Alabang Country Club construction in 1981, it has been one of the premier golf clubs in the Metro Manila area.

Alta Vista Golf and Country Club

Beverly Place Golf Club, was built in the city of Mexico, about 25kms or 41 minutes’ drive from Angeles City.
The short 7,028 yard 18-hole course was designed by one of legends in golf, none other than Gary Player.
This public course started out with the back nine first, and then they added on the newer front nine.

Canlubang Golf & Country Club
One of the largest golf courses in the Philippines
Canlubang is perhaps one of the largest golf courses in the Philippines. Originally a sugar plantation, Robert Trent Jones created two courses here, North and South.

Cebu Country Club
(Gary Player re-designed and oldest course on Cebu)
The Cebu Country Club, which is the oldest golf course in Cebu, was established, by expatriates, among them American, British and Spanish back in 1928. The club initially only had nine-holes until the early 1960s, when another nine holes added to make it 18, with a Par 71.
In the ’80s, the renovation of the course, making it a Par 72.
Clark Sun Valley Golf & Country Club

This 36-hole Korean-owned golf course, Clark Sun Valley Golf and Country Club is a mere 27 minutes from Angeles City and is very close to the city. If you are coming from Manila, allow around two hours, but that will depend on the time of day.

Club Intramuros Golf Course
Day and night golf right in the heart of the city
During the colonization period, the takeover of the Spaniards in the country led to the creation of the “Walled City” called Intramuros. Construction of the walls were built to prevent foreign invaders from crashing in.
Years after during the American colonization, the walls were rebuilt and drastic changes were made to the city, including building a golf course.
Del Monte Golf & Country Club
Once a pineapple plantation owned by this world-famous company
Del Monte Golf Course and Country Club was built back in 1928, and is located within the enormous Del Monte Plantation of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon.
The first nine holes of the course were built surprisingly by Professional Basketball Player called Peter Crawford. While its last nine holes was built by the country’s legendary golfer, Celestino Tugot.

The Fontana and Apollon Korea Country Club are located just 28 minutes drive northwest of Angeles City and close to the former US Airbase in Clark Special Economic Zone Pampanga.
The club, built in 2012, is a massive 36-hole golf course that is internationally run and managed by Korean companies.

Roughly a two and half hour drive from Manila, or just 52 minutes North of Angeles City, Luisita Golf and Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in the country, having opened for play in 1967.

Manila Golf and Country Club was named as the “oldest and finest golf course in the country” by local newspaper, Philippine Star.
In 1901, the first Manila Golf Club’s course was laid out in Caloocan. Then In 1949, the course was transferred to Makati, where shortly after World War II, it acquired a tract of land adjacent to Fort William Mckinley.
Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club

Awarded in 2020 as the top golf course in the Philippines by Golf Digest, this club is 41 kilometers south of Manila and takes around 1.5 hours to drive along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX).

Marina Hills Golf & Country Club
9-hole Army course open to the public
Marina Hills Golf and Country Club is an army course located in Pampanga City, around 12 kms north of Angeles City.
It’s another short 9-hole public course, which allows for flexibility of playing time and speed of the players. It is a Par 36, 3,217 yards layout, but you can play the holes twice if you have the time.

Sherwood Hills Golf Club
Top 18 holes in the Philippines
Sherwood Hills is one of three Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses in the country, and apparently it happens to be the Golden Bear’s favorite.
Located only a half hour outside Makati City, Sherwood Hills is not to be missed.
Nicklaus was in the country doing a site inspection of the construction of the two golf courses at Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club (both Nicklaus signatures) when Freddy Campos invited him out to Trece Martires, Cavite to check out another property they were in the midst of developing.
South Forbes Golf Club
The course was built in 2006. Relatively short in length as it just a par 67 and with seven par 3 holes, the course is by all means not easy to play as the layout was carved out of rolling country side with many holes laid out across hills and some chasms. What it lacks in length is fully made up with challenges off the tee and difficulties in going for the greens.

Splendido Taal Golf Course
If you like hilly terrain, then this Greg Norman layout will not disappoint.
This all-weather golf course is located on hilly terrain, and was designed by golfing legend Greg Norman.
Construction began in 1996 and was completed four years later in 2000. Each hole has four sets of tees, and the yardage from the back tees is 6,997.

Not to be confused with the Clark Sun Valley Golf near Clark in Pampanga, Sun Valley is around 75 minutes from Manila.
Originally designed by John Hamilton of the Arnold Palmer Design team, it has 21 holes, three of which were designed for use at their academy. It is one of the top 30 courses in the country.

Listed as one of the most picturesque courses in the country, Tagaytay Highlands International Golf Club, also boasts some of the most picturesque views of Taal Volcano.
The club is located 65 kilometers away from the capital city, Manila and overlooks Taal Lake and volcano, and the drive from Manila takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
There is also a second course called The Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club, and is also an 18-hole championship golf courses set atop Tagaytay's highest elevations, offering year-round cool weather.

The Country Club Philippines is close to Makati, and about 50 kilometers away from Manila, via the South Super Highway and thru the Silangan exit.
It is one of the best and few exclusive clubs not only in the Philippines, but in Asia as well.

The Iloilo Golf & Country Club
May be old but still challenging
The Iloilo Golf and Country Club, formerly and informally known as the Santa Barbara Golf Course in Brgy. San Sebastian, Santa Barbara, was built in 1907 by a group of Irish expatriates building the Panay line of Panay Railways.
It has endured many historical changes throughout it’s time, being originally a nine-hole course, and then they added another nine holes.

Verdamar Golf Club
Short course but with a unique par 6 on hole number two
Located in the oldest city in the Philippines, is the Verdamar Golf Club.
It is about two hours’ drive from Mactan Airport, and Cebu City just past Bogo. The club is a two-hour drive along cemented roads, along the coastline, and along some interesting mountain towns to Bogo.

Being close to the centre of town, it is a popular choice for local golfers and tourists
Located around the corner from Resorts World Manila and very close to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Villamor is a good 18-hole par 72 course.
Although a fairly flat layout, the 6,271 yards is still an exciting challenge with narrow fairways and a few water hazards to contend with.
A well-established public course, it has hosted the Philippines Open in the past.
