Philippines are divided into three main regions, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Across these regions you will find a selection of fantastic golf courses, and Philippines has now become one of the top destinations in Asia for a golf holiday.

History of Golf Here

In spite of the humidity and heat, golf seems to be very popular in the country. It all started quite a long time ago – supposedly brought over by the British men who worked for the Manila Railway Company.

Apparently with ample time on their hands and a surplus of caddies available to haul one’s clubs and the occasional beer, the Brits built a 3-hole course somewhere in the paddy fields around Intramuros, now in the centre of the capital city.

The sport became popular enough that by 1901, a 9-hole course was built next to the railway station in Caloocan.

Now there are in fact around 111 Golf Courses in the Philippines, many around Manila and spread out throughout 5,000 of those islands.

(Short course with a flat layout)
This par 72 18-hole course is located near the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, around a 20 minutes’ drive North West from Angeles City. Air Force City is a relatively short course at 6,179 yards, and has a flat layout, with well-maintained Carabao grassed fairways and greens. Don’t be fooled, however, by their flat fairways, as they are known to be relatively unforgiving and slow.

Founded back in 1981, this Club has a total land area of 74 hectares that includes a par 72, 6,950 yards 18-hole golf course. Ever since the Alabang Country Club construction in 1981, it has been one of the premier golf clubs in the Metro Manila area. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr.

This Club opened in the ’90s, by one of the Cebu’s oldest families, the Aznar’s of Southwestern University. Located some 500 feet above the nearby beaches and just 5 miles from the heart of the City, Cebu's Alta Vista Golf Club occupies 60 hectares of a 400-hectare exclusive residential cum leisure development. Gary Player’s Black Knight Design Group of South Africa commissioned to design a championship layout here, that offers an exciting challenge to the game of golf.

Beverly Place Golf Club, was built in the city of Mexico, about 25kms or 41 minutes’ drive from Angeles City. The short 7,028 yard 18-hole course was designed by one of legends in golf, none other than Gary Player. This public course started out with the back nine first, and then they added on the newer front nine.

Canlubang is perhaps one of the largest golf courses in the Philippines. Originally a sugar plantation, Robert Trent Jones created two courses here, North and South. The Club is situated in Laguna, just 5 kilometers from Terelay and around 1 hour 45 minutes south of Manila.

The Cebu Country Club, which is the oldest golf course in Cebu, was established, by expatriates, among them American, British and Spanish back in 1928. The club initially only had nine-holes until the early 1960s, when another nine holes added to make it 18, with a Par 71. In the ’80s, the renovation of the course, making it a Par 72.

This 36-hole Korean-owned golf course, Clark Sun Valley Golf and Country Club is a mere 27 minutes from Angeles City and is very close to the city. If you are coming from Manila, allow around two hours, but that will depend on the time of day.   This relatively new club has two good 18-hole golf courses.

During the colonization period, the takeover of the Spaniards in the country led to the creation of the “Walled City” called Intramuros. Construction of the walls were built to prevent foreign invaders from crashing in. Years after during the American colonization, the walls were rebuilt and drastic changes were made to the city, including building a golf course.

Del Monte Golf Course and Country Club was built back in 1928, and is located within the enormous Del Monte Plantation of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon. The first nine holes of the course were built surprisingly by Professional Basketball Player called Peter Crawford. While its last nine holes was built by the country’s legendary golfer, Celestino Tugot.

The Fontana and Apollon Korea Country Club are located just 28 minutes drive northwest of Angeles City and close to the former US Airbase in Clark Special Economic Zone Pampanga. The club, built in 2012, is a massive 36-hole golf course that is internationally run and managed by Korean companies. Two types of grass cover the fairways: Carabao and Zoysia.

To the north west of Manila, Luisita has the distinction of being named as 13th on the list of Top 100 Courses in the Philippines. Roughly a two and half hour drive from Manila, or just 52 minutes North of Angeles City, Luisita Golf and Country Club is one of the oldest golf courses in the country, having opened for play in 1967. This 18-hole championship course, was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior.

Manila Golf and Country Club was named as the “oldest and finest golf course in the country” by local newspaper, Philippine Star. In 1901, the first Manila Golf Club’s course was laid out in Caloocan. Then In 1949, the course was transferred to Makati, where shortly after World War II, it acquired a tract of land adjacent to Fort William Mckinley.

Marina Hills Golf and Country Club is an army course located in Pampanga City, around 12 kms north of Angeles City. It’s another short 9-hole public course, which allows for flexibility of playing time and speed of the players. It is a Par 36, 3,217 yards layout, but you can play the holes twice if you have the time.

Top 18 holes in the Philippines
Sherwood Hills is one of three Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses in the country, and apparently it happens to be the Golden Bear’s favorite. Located only a half hour outside Makati City, Sherwood Hills is not to be missed. The course was built in 2006. Relatively short in length as it just a par 67 and with seven par 3 holes, the course is by all means not easy to play as the layout was carved out of rolling country side with many holes laid out across hills and some chasms. What it lacks in length is fully made up with challenges off the tee and difficulties in going for the greens.

Although a fairly flat layout, the 6,271 yards is still an exciting challenge with narrow fairways and a few water hazards to contend with. A well-established public course, it has hosted the Philippines Open in the past.
