Asian Golf Travel Nation - June 2015 |

I have some great news. Golf in Thailand is now better and less expensive! Can you believe green fees in Chiang Mai are $36 US Dollars in June while golf in Hua Hin is only $45 Dollars in August and September? Pattaya green fees are $55 US Dollars or less on selected days of the week until the end of October. These rates even include great courses like Black Mountain, Banyan, and Siam CC too. Or how about staying at a 5* Phuket golf resort for less than $100 US Dollars a night? Drop me an email if you are interested and I will send you the details of all of the savings. Here at Golfasian we participated in the Golf Tourism Convention in Jakarta last month and it was good to see many of our longtime friends from overseas and meet with new partners too. I was especially impressed with the golf in Jakarta. It will take some time to build the demand and there are certainly issues with traffic and stability, but it is hard to fault the service. In fact, if you can believe it, the service and especially the caddies easily beat those in other areas like Thailand and Vietnam. The Centara World Masters event will be held June 14-20 in Hua Hin. The event will be Thailand's biggest ever golf tournament for club & visiting golfers. There are only a few slots left, so if you want to play register your interest now. The Accor Vietnam World Masters will be held in Danang this September. This event still has availability so be sure to sign-up and be part of the festivities. Finally, there will be two great Amateur Week events in October. One will be staged in Pattaya and the other in Chiang Mai. More information on both events can be found here. Of course there are more and more golf updates around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Nation. To those who are travelling with us and/or playing in the Centara World Masters, thank you for your support. To others who are still at home; I hope to welcome you to the sunny weather, world-class golf courses and unique Asian culture very soon. A winner of the 2015 World Golf Awards with the title of Asia's Best Golf Tour Operator 2014, Golfasian has once again been nominated for Thailand's & Vietnam's Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator. Please, vote for us now: Thank you! Now for the golf news from around the region: Golf news from around the region: Indonesia

The golf Week in Vietnam is in its second year and based on last year's comments from players many didn't know that Vietnam had so many good golf courses. Danang is the host city, and the golf courses are designed by golf notables such as Greg Norman (Danang Golf Club), Sir Nick Faldo (Laguna Lang Co) and Colin Montgomerie (Montgomerie Links) and all should be a stern test for golfers looking to test their skills on world class championship layouts. Parking for 4 cars, maid's quarters, storage. Outside has a private putting green, Jeux de boules! Really this place has it all. Within the grounds of this golf course development are other facilities such as tennis, squash, badminton, fitness and snooker. The Golf Course currently has currently 18holes available and plans are in place to increase this with a further 9 holes. A great family home as well as a strong investment with growing Hua Hin. To find out more about how easy it is to purchase property and how the prices are comparatively much cheaper than those in the West, please contact the GM of our Property Division - Andy Dyett - [email protected]. Feel free to stop by our office and see what we can offer or take our property tour (free of charge). For a complete listing of Thailand properties visit our website. |

I am a member of Al Hamra Golf Club situated in Ras Al Khaimah in the UAE. It is a stunning Championship course measuring 7,325 yards, meandering around four inter-connected lagoons that merge with the Arabian Gulf. This was my first trip to Thailand and I came with my husband plus another couple with whom we regularly play. Asia is only 7 hours flight time from the UAE so not such a trek. I had heard a lot of good reports about Thailand and the golf courses so did some further research and eventually selected Phuket. The price was the best that I could find. I spent a lot of time looking at different options... booking hotel/golf independently and going through agents; Golfasian came out superior. Ian Morgan, their Phuket Manager, advised me on the itinerary. We wanted everything to be taken care of so we could sit back and enjoy ourselves. The group flew direct from Dubai to Phuket and were met at the airport by Golfasian who transferred us to the Pullman Arcadia; the rooms had a gorgeous view of the ocean We were very lucky to be in Phuket during Thailand's Songkran New Year celebrations which everyone celebrates by showering each other in water; it was huge fun. We also visited various temples and an elephant sanctuary so it wasn't all about golf. We played 4 courses: Mission Hills, Loch Palm, Laguna and Blue Canyon. Having caddies was a new experience and although we had researched what services they performed we were still unsure of what to expect; in the end pleasantly surprised. All ladies, they were very friendly and knowledgeable which made the golf even more enjoyable. The weather was a little humid, but because we live in the Middle East this was not a problem. The condition of each course was excellent. We are used to playing on quality courses in the UAE but Phuket golf did not disappoint. Everywhere was well managed and the backdrop beautiful. The various tee options meant that all levels of player were catered for with many challenging holes but still fair even for higher handicaps. In conclusion we had a wonderful golf holiday made even more enjoyable by the professional and friendly services provided by Golfasian. Undoubtedly we will return. |

World Masters championships, already held in Australia and Thailand with another to be staged in Vietnam this year, are week-long amateur tournaments combining golf, social and entertainment that are open to male and female golfers aged 35-plus with an official handicap. The competition is played over four rounds in age and handicap divisions under tournament rules. The principals of the two companies – Mark Siegel of Golfasian and Peter McCarthy of Go Golfing – are planning future events in at least four premier oceanfront golf destinations, each expected to feature participants from more than 30 countries. Tournaments will be held at each host region's top courses, with 5-star beachfront resorts to host accommodation and official functions. Initial events announced for 2015 include the second edition of the Centara World Masters from June 14-20 in Hua Hin, Thailand and the inaugural Accor Vietnam World Masters from September 6-12 in Danang, Vietnam. Additional events are expected in 2016 at famous golf and holiday destinations, including Bali, Indonesia. Go Golfing managing director, Peter McCarthy, said that after running World Masters events for 20 years in Australia, it was appropriate to broaden the format. "With 700 visitors expected for the Centara World Masters in Hua Hin next month, it is clear golfers, sponsors and tourism are keen for these events". "Ask anyone who has played a World Masters tournament and you will understand why they are so popular," he added. Golfasian managing director, Mark Siegel, said Asia's high service standards and excellent value for money made World Masters events highly attractive for club golfers, many of who travel long distances to compete. "Participants play great courses, meet people from all around the world who often become close friends and experience the culture of countries and destinations they may have long wished to visit." |

The Opening Tee Shot – Some trickier than others
Nevertheless, things aren't that straightforward and with all the positivity in the world some shots are more intimidating than others. In general terms I'd rather not have a long par 3 to start with simply because long irons are the weakest part of my game and there just seems to be less margin for error and more likelihood of a bogey which isn't the ideal start; plus my short game needs "warming up" as it's the second weakest part of my game! When I asked colleagues at Golfasian there was definitely a theme...water left and right of the landing area are a big psychological issue no matter how generous the fairway, particularly with a strong crosswind, although a long water carry off the tee wasn't worrisome and personally I'd rather grip it and rip it anyway. Let's look at some examples and perhaps you can post some of your own... Other golf stories can be found at the Thailand Golf Zone, Vietnam Golf Zone and Phuket Golf Zone where there are over 600 other original articles dealing exclusively with golf in Asia and golf travel. I would love to hear about any golf tips that any of you may have developed for getting the maximum enjoyment from your golf trips, and can incorporate some in future articles. Therefore if you have any golf tips or suggestions you would like to share, please let me know by dropping me an email. |

We've seen people packing 7 rounds into an 8-day trip which might be alright if you are super fit but for us mere mortals a break somewhere along the line is probably a good idea. If not, take a cart just to give yourself some sort of relief. The other often overlooked aid is the trusty umbrella, which if you've arrived from Europe is probably more designed to keep the rain off. If so, invest in an anti-UV umbrella at your first pro shop; you'll be surprised at the impact it has on keeping your body temperature down. The caddy will happily carry it for you and hold it over your head whilst waiting for others to play their shots. This isn't just about avoiding any sort of heat stroke, but also about keeping your concentration levels high later in the round. Follow these simple guidelines and not only will you enjoy your holiday more, you'll shoot lower scores.
